Democracy Happens Every Day

Voting is one of the most important ways citizens participate in democracy—but it is not the only one. Throughout the year, the League of Women Voters of Bloomington brings people together through civic education, youth programs, community partnerships, and innovative projects that inspire informed participation and strengthen our community. Every initiative reflects our commitment to building a more engaged Bloomington, one conversation, one partnership, and one citizen at a time.

The Civics Bee: Inspiring Civic Knowledge and Engagement

The annual Civics Bee, created through a partnership between Bloomington Public Schools and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington, brings together seventh-grade students from Oak Grove, Olson, and Valley Middle Schools for a lively competition focused on U.S. government, history, and civic responsibility. Through challenging questions and friendly competition, the program deepens students’ understanding of democracy, strengthens critical-thinking skills, encourages lifelong civic participation, and builds stronger connections among students, schools, and the wider Bloomington community.

Naturalization Ceremonies: Welcoming New Citizens and Encouraging Civic Engagement

At naturalization ceremonies, League of Women Voters volunteers welcome new U.S. citizens and help them take their first steps toward civic participation by providing clear, nonpartisan voting information, answering questions, and assisting with voter registration. This work helps new citizens understand and exercise their rights, strengthens their sense of belonging, and encourages active participation in their communities and in American democracy.

Bloomington Adopt-A-Drain Program: Keeping Our Waterways Clean

The League of Women Voters of Bloomington proudly supports the Bloomington Adopt-A-Drain program, encouraging residents to help protect local lakes, rivers, and streams by keeping neighborhood storm drains free of leaves, trash, and other debris. By adopting a drain, volunteers reduce pollution, improve water quality, help prevent flooding, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for both wildlife and the Bloomington community.

Have an Idea?

Some of our most successful programs began with a simple conversation. If you have an idea for a civic education program, community partnership, public event, or other initiative that aligns with the League's mission, we'd love to hear from you. Together, we can create new opportunities to educate, engage, and strengthen our Bloomington community.

Let’s start the conversation.
