ABOUT US

The League of Women Voters Bloomington is a non-partisan, political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.

LWVB never endorses political candidates or parties.

The Bloomington League has a long history in the community and is a resource for questions about issues, candidates, voting procedures, and resident involvement.

We meet regularly throughout the year, and coordinate candidate forums, community service projects, informational events, and other activities.

The League of Women Voters Bloomington is part of the State League and National League of Women Voters. Click here to see the MN League website.

LWV MN History

League of Women Voters Minnesota was incorporated on October 29, 1919, shortly after the Minnesota Legislature ratified the 19th Amendment on September 8, 1919: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

Full suffrage for women in the United States was finally achieved on August 26, 1920, after decades of organizing, protesting, legislative initiatives and great persistence. However, Native Americans were not US citizens until 1924, and all people of color couldn’t fully exercise their right to vote until the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

LWV MINNESOTA’S SUPPORT ROLE

The value that LWVMN provides at the state level include:

  • coordinated efforts for priority issues (e.g., redistricting, AVR);

  • training for taking action on non-priority issues (through Lobby Corps);

  • limited support for action on non-priority issues (e.g., amicus briefs);

  • training for moderators and candidate forum planners;

  • compliance assistance with state and federal election law and IRS political activity requirements;

  • general liability insurance coverage (for subsidiary LWVs);

  • designing/ordering branded products and League merchandise;

  • state meetings (Convention and Council)

2023 was a very busy year! Our 2023 LWVB Annual Report details our accomplishments.
